In 1967, Muhammad Ali, the World’s Heavyweight Champion refused induction into the army. He had converted to Islam and had become a black Muslim minister. When Ali refused military service as a conscientious objector because of his new religion, a Federal jury sentenced him to 5 years in jail for draft evasion. Boxing commissions then stripped him of his title and denied him the right to fight. He was in the prime of his fighting years, but wasn’t allowed in the ring. He was widely condemned as a traitor.
